Jethro looked down at the handwritten instructions, then back up again at the large sign of a smiling Audino that looked too damn cheerful for it's own good. He was starting to get the sinking feeling that he'd traveled to the wrong homestead. [break][break]

It had been obnoxious enough when old McGillicutty from just across the holler had roped him into this egg delivery business, but Jethro couldn't deny that he desperately needed a favor in return. There were fences that needed fixing, soil that needed tilling, and Jethro was only one man, so when McGillicutty had promised to loan his boys to give him a hand with sprucing up his little parcel of land, Jethro couldn't refuse. [break][break]

But now that he was here, staring at the chick-scratch directions that the old coot had written down for him, Jethro was starting to become aware of some discrepancies. What he thought said Duvet Ranch was starting to look a little more like Dubois Ranch. Maybe he'd passed a place like on the way over? And he thought these eggs were supposed to be heading to a local daycare, not a privately owned property. [break][break]

Jethro sighed with agitation as the bull next to him lowed impatiently, saddlebags full of eggs resting across the Tauros' back. The old ex-Ranger leaned against some nearby fencing and glowered; alright, so he'd probably have to hit the road again soon, but Jethro was damned if he was hitting the old dusty trail again before he got a chance to rest his tired feet. Maybe if he moved out quickly enough, the homeowner wouldn't realize there was a stranger loitering on their property.

Jethro's entry into Duvet Ranch didn't go unnoticed. A pair of Audino approached the man. The more sociable of the two, Dede, continued to approach the man, greeting him cheerfully. Meanwhile, Bunni, the shyer of the two, went off to retrieve her master, let him know he had company.

Given that this assignment was arranged by McGillicutty, Thomas was already well on his way to greet the ex-Ranger, meeting Bunni down the middle, and giving her a reassuring pet on the head. The two then walked over to meet Jethro, and Dede.

Thomas, who's hair had blackened, and face scarred up since their last encounter, greeted the man. "Unova get too boring for you, Jethro?", Thomas teased the Ranger. "It's been almost six years now, how have you been?", Thomas greeted the man, offering him a handshake.

Despite the lingering agitation brought on by exhaustion, Jethro had to bite back a smile at the sight of the first tottering Audino that greeted him. They were such sweet creatures, with those wide blue eyes and gentle dispositions. He waved to it casually and pushed himself off of the fence, turning and suddenly noticing a man striding up to meet him. [break][break]

It took Jethro longer than he would have liked to recall where he'd first seen the presumed homeowner that greeted him with such familiarity. The dark hair didn't ring any bells, but the vague lilt of Kalos in the man's voice did. Just where in the hell did Jethro know him from? [break][break]

When the realization finally struck him, it did so with all the force of a freight train. Thomas, the Kalosian? A ranch-hand that he had worked with back in Unova, whose presence had drawn in the gawking eyes and affections of locals who were enamored by his accent and work ethic. Jethro laughed with some disbelief as he took the man's hand to return the shake with a firm grip, [break][break]

“Well ain't you a sight for sore eyes!” Jethro exclaimed with a delight he hadn't felt in ages, “Could ask ya the same, Thomas.” [break][break]

His mood soured somewhat when he recalled just why he'd moved in the first place, and Jethro's eyes drifted to the scars across Thomas' face. It looked like the younger man had seen his own share of suffering since they'd last met, too, [break][break]

“Been better, all told, but I'm gettin' along. How 'bout you?”

Thomas noticed the look on the cowboy's face. Whatever brought him to Hoenn, it clearly wasn't good. The only question was whether or not he should press further.

"Had my ups and downs, to be honest. All things considered, I'm getting along myself.", Thomas replied to Jethro. Though he was happy with life on the Ranch, and his time with DESIREE BLOOMS, the dangers looming over the horizon constantly haunted him. His greatest fear was losing everything to Rocket, or the many cosmic forces that assailed their world.

A fear that had only been exacerbated by his exposure to Ting Lu's influence in Area Zero the prior month. It had created tension between him and Desiree, something he regretted.

Bunni briefly ran off, as the two men were talking. Eventually, she returned, offering the older man a bottle of water.

Both men had their woes, it seemed, but there was nothing for it but to press forward. The world would still keep spinning regardless of whether or not they buckled under the weight of what it had to offer them, so what choice did they have but to persist in spite of it all? [break][break]

At least, that was Jethro's way of seeing things. He watched one of the Audino dart off and return with a bottle of water, which he gratefully accepted. Suddenly, he remembered why he'd stopped here in the first place, [break][break]

“Say, you ain't expectin' a shipment of eggs, are ya?” he asked as he dug out the note and presented it to the younger man, “'Cause I sure as shit can't make heads or tails outta this here scribblin'.” [break][break]

Though wouldn't it be a hell of a coincidence if he ended up in the right place after all, met by a reunion he hadn't expected? Jethro took a long drink from his bottle of water; Arceus certainly worked in mysterious ways.

Bunni smiled as the man took the bottle of water. The Audino then walked back to her master's side.

"From McGillicutty, right? Yeah, he wants me to train a pack of guard dogs for his property.", Thomas explained to the Unovan. Being ex-Interpol and ex-Elite Four made him an ideal choice to raise guard Pokemon. Such an impressive resume also made such endeavors lucrative, though he tended to cut a discount for his fellow Ranchers, especially McGillicutty.

"Say, is Bertha still working with him? If she is, let her know I said 'hello.'", he inquired.

When starting out, he remembered how McGillicutty sent Bertha over to help him get the place functional. The extra set of hands she provided helped him immensely.

“Yessir,” Jethro acknowledged as he wiped droplets of water from his mouth onto his arm, “Ain't nothin' like a good guard dog.” [break][break]

Which reminded him that he had a lanky little Houndoom back at his own farm that needed to be put through his paces. Nash was sweet, if a little jumpy, but Jethro was sure that the Fire-type would shape up to be an excellent addition to his team with a little patience and training. Maybe he ought to bring him by Thomas' place if he found himself out in these parts again. [break][break]

But, that was neither here nor there, especially when the mention of Bertha came up, [break][break]

“She sure is.” [break][break]

And Jethro could respect the hell out of her; a staunch, no nonsense, salt-of-the-earth woman after his own heart, [break][break]

“Hell, she loaded up half'a these eggs herself.” [break][break]

He gestured back to the eggs loaded on his Tauros' harness, [break][break]

“Speakin' of, where you need me ta drop these little'uns off at?”

"I know Saejima will put them through their paces. Though Rufus will probably want to play with them, so I got to watch out for that.", Thomas remarked with a chuckle.

Though Saejima wasn't a Pokemon he owned during his time in Unova, Rufus was one of Thomas' most trusted Pokemon back then. A lovable and energetic Growlithe. Extremely friendly, but a fierce battler, when needed. The last time they spoke, Rufus was hospitalized after the final battle with the Harmonia Foundation.

The way he mentioned the puppy-like Pokemon clearly showed he was alive and well, despite what happened.

"Good to know she's still as active as ever.", Thomas remarked with a smile.

"If you'd be able to bring your Tauros over to the building with the egg sign, I have Pokemon that can unload and place the eggs.", Thomas told the older man.

Thomas pointed him in the direction of the building. Thankfully, the egg sign was large, and visible from where they were currently speaking.

Greeting the cowboy were several more Audinos, as well as a single Blissey. As promised, the group of medics grabbed the eggs, and began placing them in the incubators. If Jethro were to follow them inside, which they wouldn't prevent him from doing so, he'd quickly find the building was well organized, with the Blissey and her Audino helpers running it like a well-oiled machine.

Their natures, as well as further training, clearly showed themselves.

“Glad to hear yer pup's still as lively as ever.” [break][break]

Because few things in the world could replace a dog like that. Jethro hadn't been sure if the Growlithe had pulled through his ordeal, but it was some small comfort to know that he seemed to be doing just fine. [break][break]

But the time for reminiscing was over. Jethro eyed the building in question, its signage unmistakable, and offered Thomas a nod of acknowledgment, [break][break]

“Consider it done.” [break][break]

With that, Jethro lead ol' Titus over, and between the quick work of the Audino and Jethro's attempts at helping, the eggs were squirreled away with relatively little effort. If Thomas had chosen to follow Jethro into the facility, the farmer would offer his goodbyes there, and if not, the ex-Ranger would return to the spot they met at to do the same before he departed for home, [break][break]

“Got a helluva operation here, kid. Maybe I oughta find me a couple'a helpers like these for my own parcel'a land.” [break][break]

Because not only did the Audino work with a meticulous efficiency, but Jethro couldn't deny that they were really god damn cute, too.
